This is one of the best and most unique thrillers I’ve ever seen. The setup creates an entirely new kind of experience, though I must warn you it’s extremely graphic with intense sexual violence. I rarely get surprised by movies, but Strange Darling is unlike anything else. If you enjoy the twisted thrillers I recommend, catch it in theaters now—the score and twists won’t hit as hard at home. Plus, it was shot on 35mm film and looks stunning.
Alien: Romulus – The Sequel That Revives Space Horror
If you’re a fan of the Alien franchise, space horror, or just love a good scare, then Alien: Romulus is the movie you’ve been waiting for. You’ve heard the hype; now for my two cents… Longlegs features one of Nicolas Cage’s most bizarre performances. If you know anything about Cage, you can imagine just how strange this flick must be. I will say that I loved the direction of this movie but Longlegs has its own uniquely potent life force. It’s unsettling while also deeply interesting… until it’s not.
Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga That Rages On
I’ve been waiting for this movie since the credits rolled on Fury Road in 2015. Furiosa is easily my most anticipated movie of the year, and it did not disappoint. That should be all you need to hear, but I’ll add that Chris Hemsworth totally surprised me! I knew he had some acting chops from his role in Bad Times at the El Royale, but this is a whole new level. I was reminded of Heath Ledger multiple times while watching. Yeah... I know.
